PRP Hair Restoration

Hair loss can be caused by a range of factors, from genetics to hormones to medications. But whatever the cause, hair loss is a real concern for thousands of men and women, affecting their confidence, their self-image, and even their relationships. Luckily, advanced treatments like PRP therapy are now available to help restore hair growth.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy uses components from a patient’s own blood to encourage healing and regrowth. PRP therapy can trigger natural hair growth and thicken the hair shaft by increasing blood supply to hair follicles.

How Does PRP Therapy for Hair Loss Work?

PRP therapy begins with taking a blood sample from the patient. The sample is spun in a centrifuge, causing it to separate into three layers – red blood cells, plasma, and platelet-rich plasma. The platelet-rich plasma layer is then collected and applied to the scalp to treat areas of baldness or thinning hair.

Most patients require several sessions, spread over a few months, to achieve the best results, and maintenance sessions are often necessary as well. New hair growth appears as early as 2 months after treatment, with full results visible in about 5 – 8 months.

What Are the Benefits of PRP Therapy?

Because a PRP injection is made from the patient’s own blood, there is a very low chance of negative reactions or side effects. All injections carry a slight risk of infection or irritation, and some patients experience minor reactions such as tenderness or swelling at the injection site, but there are no major side effects associated with PRP therapy.

PRP hair restoration is a relatively quick procedure, with most sessions lasting about an hour. The vast majority of patients are able to resume normal activities right away with no restrictions.

Is PRP Hair Restoration an Option for Me?

PRP Hair Restoration is an option for many patients, and it has been used to effectively treat hair loss resulting from:

  • Alopecia Areata and Alopecia Totalis
  • Male and Female Pattern Baldness
  • Hypotrichosis (fine/reduced hairs) of the beard or eyebrows
  • Metabolic causes, such as iron deficiency
  • Medication-induced hair loss

There are some factors such as smoking and obesity that may increase the risk of general complications or reduce the effectiveness of treatment, making a small set of patients less likely to benefit from PRP therapy. A qualified practitioner can discuss these factors with you to determine if PRP treatment is right for you.
